In many cases, Judges and Magistrates can at their discretion, issue a bond for a wide-range of charges. The amount of the bond is left to the discretion of the Magistrate or the Court.
When bond is given, the amount of the bond is what must be guaranteed to the court before you are released-that’s where the Bond Agent come in.
The Process
Once arrested and booked, the defendant has several options for release pending the outcome of his case. He/She might need a cash bond, a surety bond or a “PR” bond.”
In cases where a cash-bond is several thousand dollars, a bond agent posts the bond amount to the court of a fee, generally 10% of the total bond amount.
